Temu launched in the UK in 2022 with an aggressive marketing strategy built around extraordinarily low prices — items that would cost £20–£50 elsewhere are often listed for £2–£5. The platform is owned by PDD Holdings, which operates Pinduoduo (one of China's largest e-commerce platforms) and is listed on the NASDAQ. Being NASDAQ-listed provides some degree of accountability compared to fully opaque operators, and Temu does generally process refund requests. In that respect, it is not an outright scam.
The concerns are nevertheless serious. The Temu app has been repeatedly flagged by security researchers for requesting permissions that far exceed what a shopping app would normally need — including access to microphones, location data, and device identifiers. In 2023, US senators wrote to the company's CEO demanding answers about data practices. In the UK, consumer organisations have found numerous Temu products that do not meet British safety standards, including electrical goods with dangerous wiring and children's toys with unsafe materials. Some orders simply never arrive, particularly lower-value items.
For UK shoppers: if you choose to use Temu, use the website rather than the app, pay by credit card for Section 75 protection, and be realistic about product quality at these price points. Do not buy electrical goods, children's products, or anything safety-critical. Keep receipts and screenshot order confirmations, as you may need them for a chargeback claim if the item does not arrive. There are considerably safer options available for UK online shopping.
