Wish has a severely damaged reputation. Counterfeit goods, extreme delivery delays, product safety failures and a consistent pattern of non-delivery reports make it a platform we cannot recommend to UK consumers. There are far better alternatives available.
Wish was once one of the most downloaded shopping apps in the world, but it has suffered a dramatic fall from grace. Founded in 2010 by Peter Szulczewski and Danny Zhang and later listed on NASDAQ via ContextLogic Inc, the platform connects US and European consumers with predominantly Chinese sellers offering rock-bottom prices. The premise was always that you were sacrificing quality and speed for price — but the reality has proved far worse than even that trade-off would suggest.
In 2021, Wish was temporarily banned from the French government's official search recommendations after French consumer watchdog DGCCRF found that 95% of tested products contained dangerous materials or failed safety standards. The app was also removed from Google Play and the Apple App Store in France. While global operations continued, the episode severely damaged the brand's credibility. Counterfeit goods — fake branded trainers, watches, electronics — are rampant. Many UK customers report waiting 2–3 months for orders that may arrive completely different to the listing photograph, or not arrive at all.
ContextLogic's financial reports show dramatic revenue declines from peak. The company has struggled to recover user trust and has significantly reduced its marketing spend. For UK consumers, the combination of weak consumer rights protection on cross-border purchases, unpredictable delivery, high rates of product non-compliance with UK safety standards, and a history of regulatory action in Europe makes Wish a platform we recommend avoiding entirely. If price is your priority, AliExpress or even Temu offer marginally better buyer protection frameworks.
